Over the past few years Sue has been exploring painting and drawing.
Inspired by the natural world, she works in pastel, acrylic,
charcoal, watercolour and mixed media. In the summer of 2009 Sue had surgery on her right hand and was unable to work for 4 months. During that time she took advantage of being naturally ambidextrous and tried painting left-handed. "It was a wonderfully liberating experience for me as I had no expectation of producing good work, only of playing and experimenting. When painting in this way I felt completely different. When I used my right hand I researched, planned carefully and was quite detailed and logical in my approach. With my left hand I worked more quickly, loosely and spontaneously, reacting to the painting as it emerged. Imagine my surprise when I produced almost 20 paintings that I was pleased with. They are very different to anything I have done before and I find the experience has opened up new exciting opportunities for me." A piece of Sue's left-handed work was recently a finalist in the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation's Wildlife Artist of the Year and was on show at the Mall Galleries, London in May 2010. Sue also opens her studio as part of Peterborough Artists' Open Studios. For more information please click OPEN STUDIO Please click on an image to visit the galleries. |
