INITIAL CONTACT
Commissioning calligraphy is a partnership between the calligrapher and the client. Every client's requirements are unique and Sue prefers to discuss these individually and in person whenever possible. This dialogue is likely to cover such things as the function of the piece, the format, materials, style of writing, colours, decoration and the approximate size. Sue believes that the words are of the utmost importance and that they are the key to unlocking the design. A piece of calligraphy is likely to be far more successful and pleasing to the recipient if the design is appropriate to the words. Equally, a design which has been forced into set requirements, such as a predetermined size of frame, can be disappointing to the client and calligrapher alike.
THE DESIGN PROCESS
After gaining as much input and information as possible from the client, Sue will make trials and roughs before making a draft which is presented to the client. This should show the design, styles of writing, materials, colours as well as the size and shape of the piece. Any amendments or alterations can be discussed at this stage and the client will be asked to give written permission to go ahead with the final piece. A non-refundable deposit of 50% will be payable at this time.
PRICING
Due to the diverse nature of calligraphic work, unfortunately it is not practical to give guide prices. Sue will take as much information as possible from the client and then prepare an estimate based on the expected time and materials needed for the project. It is helpful if the client can give as clear and accurate information as possible at this stage. For example, the cost of inscribing certificates varies tremendously depending on the exact amount of information needing to be written. Also, if the client has a budget in mind, it is helpful to discuss this at the outset as Sue can advise if it is possible or whether some adjustments may be required in the design. For example, vellum is a very expensive material both in terms of the initial cost and in the time needed to prepare it for writing. A good paper may be a more cost-effective alternative.
FRAMING
Sue can arrange for work to be framed and is happy to discuss the client's requirements and to advise on the cost. Generally, a framing service is only available to clients who collect the work directly from her due to the difficulties and expense of packing and sending glass by post or courier.
THE FINISHED PIECE
Finally, after much thought and care, the client will receive their finished piece of work which will be an entirely unique and original piece of calligraphy.
